Trainee Portal

The FAVOR T32 is a two year program in which trainees devote 90% time effort to research guided from one mentor for the CRT core and one mentor from the SRT core with the goal of developing a research career in the dual bench/bedside model for translational research. The resident trainees will receive rigorous training in the general scientific method, including critical review of the literature, development of a hypothesis or identification of an unmet clinical need, experimental design and execution, data analysis and interpretation, scientific writing and oral presentation.

Trainees must meet with the mentors prior starting the program with the goal of achieving a well-defined research plan prior to the start of training so that research activities can proceed immediately. The training program blends a combination of mentored research training and didactic training, as outlined below.

Fellowship Period

Year 1:  August 1st – July 31st

Year 2:  August 1st – July 31st

This can be utilized to create an outline of curriculum coursework adding up to 100 hours per year. The courses under the base curriculum are required, while the specialized training elective courses are to be chosen at the mentee’s discretion towards the best fit to the project.

Each year, one position will be appointed as a degree seeking trainee. Degree seeking trainees must receive prior approval based on the planned coursework outlined in their initial proposal form.

The trainees are to provide a final Progress Report to reflect their achiements during the program. Importantly, the trainees will also provide a confidential evaluation of their mentors and the program.

Program Evaluation and Feedback

Each trainee will have oversight from each of the mentors (CRT core and SRT core) and the Steering Committee who will meet with the trainee semi-annually to assess progress with respect to previously outlined research goals.  Written feedback to the trainee and the mentor will be provided following each of these meeting.

In addition, the Program Director, Dr. Peter Stock, will meet individually with each trainee semi-annually, between the more formal evaluations delineated above, to provide a more intimate and informal setting to encourage open communication.  Finally, it will be required that trainees meet with their mentors at a minimum frequency of once every two weeks.  The frequency of meeting is the best way to ensure that ongoing guidance and support is being provided which will optimize with the trainee’s learning and productivity.

There will be process to obtain feedback from trainees to help identify weaknesses in the program and provide suggestions for program improvements as well as plans for assessing trainee’s career development and progression, including publications, degree completion, and post-training positions. If there is any concern on the part of either the mentor, Steering Committee, or the Program Director regarding the research progress or mentorship of a trainee, the Program Director, assisted by the Chair of the Steering Committee, will meet with the trainee mentor in question to aim to resolve the issue.  If adequate resolution cannot be achieved rapidly, the trainee will be guided to pursue a different avenue of research and/or mentorship.
